Hollyburn Community Services Society is proud to announce the opening of Morningstar, the new North Shore Seniors Safe House offering safety, stability, and support for older adults experiencing homelessness, neglect, or housing insecurity.

Created in response to the growing need for senior-specific housing, Morningstar provides seven bedrooms for short-term, home-like accommodation for individuals aged 55 and over who are in crisis or have nowhere safe to stay. Residents receive wraparound supports from Hollyburn’s Seniors at Risk Housing Outreach Team, including help securing long-term housing, accessing income supports, and connecting to health care and other vital community services.

“For many seniors, the path into homelessness can begin quietly — a lost partner, a rent increase, or declining health,” says Mark Friesen, Executive Director, Hollyburn Community Services Society. “Many of the seniors we support built our North Shore community. It’s our shared responsibility to ensure they have not just a roof over their heads, but the dignity and care they deserve as they rebuild stability.”

Morningstar is the only program of its kind on the North Shore—and one of few in the Lower Mainland—specifically designed to support seniors in crisis. The project was made possible through collaboration between the Province, through BC Housing, local municipalities and community donors who share Hollyburn’s vision of ensuring every senior can age in safety and security.

“Every senior needs access to safety and support, especially in times of crisis,” said Christine Boyle, Minister of Housing and Municipal Affairs. “Morningstar is more than a safe house. It provides stability and care for older adults who are facing homelessness or housing insecurity. We’re proud to work with local partners to ensure seniors on the North Shore have access to the dignity, care, and stability they need.”

The Safe House complements Hollyburn’s broader seniors outreach initiatives, which support more than 300 at-risk seniors each year, helping them find and maintain safe, affordable housing and live independently.

As the population of older adults continues to grow across Metro Vancouver, Morningstar will play a crucial role in preventing homelessness and supporting recovery for seniors on the North Shore.
