Hollyburn Hockey Heroes
Hollyburn Hockey Heroes is a program that helps to keep youth engaged in school by providing a weekly opportunity to play hockey. The program is offered to youth aged 14 to 18 who are otherwise unable to play hockey because of financial or social barriers. They are given equipment that they can keep after graduation, which allows them to continue to play on adult leagues. Mentors play alongside the youth, ensuring positive interactions and connections.
To maintain continuity and established relationships, the program also offers a variety of summer activities.
The goals of the Hollyburn Hockey Heroes program are simple:
- Improve school attendance
- Improve grades
- Healthier lifestyle
- Keep youth off the street
- Facilitate positive relationships with mentors and other adults
Over the past year, Hockey Heroes participants identified a 40% increase in school attendance. Teachers also observed an increase in academic success and reduction in reportable incidents within the school.
“I don’t have a lot of friends but now I do on my Hockey team. My new friends go to public skating and we play hockey on other days too.” – Client testimonial
